Text II (Questions 18-22)

(1) An international delegation recently visited Japan to assess the current state of the
environment. Members of the delegation heaped praise on the country for successfully
controlling industrial pollution in the midst of intensive economic expansion. Indeed,
despite having developed faster than most other countries over the past two decades,

(5) Japan has managed to reduce the amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and other
industrial pollutants in its environment. This achievement notwithstanding, the country's
rapid economic growth has brought with it an array of new problems.

Greater prosperity has led to a boom in recreation and internal tourism industries.
For example, golf courses and ski resorts have sprung up all over the country, usually in

(10) wilderness areas such as mountains, lakes, and seashores. As is usually the case when
humans encroach on nature, these are in imminent danger of becoming polluted and
       having their ecological balance disrupted.

Japan is also suffering the ecological ramifications of increasingly wasteful patterns
of consumption. Growing wealth has led to greater consumer spending. The Japanese

(15) purchase vast amounts of packaged goods and replace their cars and household
appliances frequently. The result has been an enormous increase in waste and a demand

for more waste disposal facilities. The delegation recommended that Japan address this
most pressing issue: the need to establish environmentally sound patterns of consumption
       and waste disposal.

Questions

18. It can be inferred from the text that one of the questions the delegation tried to answer

       was -

	 (1) What is the greatest threat to Japan's environment today?
	 (2) Why has Japan's economy grown so much in the past two decades?
	 (3) How can Japan's industrial pollution be controlled?
	 (4) What is the connection between Japan's industry and its growing wealth?

19. According to the first paragraph, Japan's economic growth -

	 (1) has caused an increase in the number of its factories
	(2)	has not increased industrial pollution
	 (3) will enable the country to combat pollution successfully
	 (4) has been praised internationally

)‫© כל הזכויות שמורות למרכז ארצי לבחינות ולהערכה (ע"ר‬
