Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each
question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 13-17)
(1) Most people think that Johnny Appleseed is a fictional character in an American
folk tale. In fact, he was a real person named John Chapman, who was born in
Massachusetts in 1774. As a young man, Chapman grew apple trees in nurseries in
New York and Pennsylvania. When the first settlers began to move west of the Ohio
(5) River in the early 1800s, Chapman went with them, taking some apple seeds along.
According to legend, Johnny simply dropped apple seeds wherever he went. In reality,
he planned and planted nurseries in many different places. Constantly on the move,
Chapman left his trees in the care of neighbors, who would sell the young seedlings to
other pioneers. He returned to his nurseries every year or two to tend the trees and
(10) collect his money.
Johnny Appleseed, as he came to be known, lived simply. He had no home of his
own, but slept outdoors or stayed with different families. He carried his apple seeds,
along with a few belongings, on his back. He did not carry a gun or any other weapon.
Johnny Appleseed was a deeply religious man who believed that it was wrong to hurt
(15) any of God's creatures. He ate no meat and would not kill even a snake or an insect. He
was a friend to both settlers and Native Americans. Although his way of life was
strange, Johnny Appleseed was well loved. His story was told far and wide and is
legend to this day.
