Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9. American political leader William Jennings Bryan failed three times in his bid for the

presidency.

(1) William Jennings Bryan made three unsuccessful attempts to become president
of the United States.

(2) William Jennings Bryan was asked three times to run for president of the United
States, but declined.

(3) William Jennings Bryan never actually ran for the presidency of the United States,
but considered doing so on three occasions.

(4) William Jennings Bryan acted as an advisor to three United States presidents but
was never elected to political office.

10. "The greatest of all faults is to be conscious of none." (Thomas Carlyle)

(1) No one is conscious of all his faults.
(2) Lack of consideration for others is the greatest of all faults.
(3) To think you have no faults is the worst fault of all.
(4) We are rarely aware of our greatest faults.

11. When we hyperventilate, we exhale an excessive amount of carbon dioxide.

(1) Hyperventilation helps reduce abnormally elevated carbon dioxide levels.
(2) Too much carbon dioxide in the air causes hyperventilation.
(3) A person who is hyperventilating breathes out too much carbon dioxide.

12. In one form of synesthesia, a rare sensory phenomenon, numbers evoke specific colors.
