Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9. By 2000 B.C.E., Akkadian had largely supplanted Sumerian as the spoken language of

southern Mesopotamia.

(1) From 2000 B.C.E. onward, Akkadian was no longer spoken in southern
Mesopotamia, having been replaced by Sumerian.

(2) By 2000 B.C.E., the majority of people in southern Mesopotamia were speaking
