16. Michelangelo's drawings have been studied in modern times more intensively than those

of any other Renaissance artist, with the possible exceptions of Raphael and Leonardo
       da Vinci.

       (1) According to recent studies, possibly the only Renaissance artist whose drawings
are more exceptional than those of Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci is Michelangelo.

       (2) In modern times, it has become possible to study not only the drawings of
Michelangelo, but also those of other Renaissance artists such as Raphael and
            Leonardo da Vinci.

       (3) No Renaissance artist's drawings, except perhaps those of Raphael and Leonardo
da Vinci, have been as closely studied in modern times as those of Michelangelo.

       (4) Michelangelo's drawings, which have been the subject of much recent study, are
more like Raphael's and Leonardo da Vinci's than like those of other Renaissance
            artists.

17. Although Japanese art aroused the interest of several Western painters simultaneously,

James Whistler was the first whose work overtly manifested its influence.

       (1) A number of Western painters became interested in Japanese art at the same time,
but the first whose work clearly reflected its influence was Whistler.

       (2) Though Japanese art did not directly affect Whistler's work, he was the first painter
to understand its profound influence on Western art.

       (3) Whistler's work, more than that of any other Western painter of his time, was
affected by the popularity of Japanese art.

       (4) Several Western painters became interested in Japanese art after they became aware
of its influence on Whistler's work.

18. It is best to keep well clear of the fulmar, a seabird that guards its nest by spitting a

       malodorous, yellowish oil at intruders.

       (1) The best way to get rid of fulmars is to spray their nests with a certain yellow, oily
substance that has an unpleasant odor.

       (2) Intruders who try to remove eggs from fulmar nests sometimes find themselves
covered in a yellow oil that smells particularly foul.

       (3) The fulmar protects its nest from other seabirds by spraying them with a yellow,
oily substance that has a strong odor.

       (4) Because the fulmar spits a foul-smelling, yellow-colored oil in order to protect its
nest, getting too close to this seabird is not wise.

)‫© כל הזכויות שמורות למרכז ארצי לבחינות ולהערכה (ע"ר‬
