10.	 The consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident remain a matter of controversy.

       (1) There is no doubt that the nuclear accident which occurred at Chernobyl had
            disastrous effects.

       (2) Debate regarding the effects of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl continues.
       (3) No one knows exactly what caused the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
       (4) The extent of the damage caused by the Chernobyl nuclear accident is only now

            being discussed.

11.	 Two irreconcilable theories purport to explain how the majority of Northerners in the 	

       United States were converted to an antislavery stance during the thirty years prior to the
       Civil War.

       (1) There were two main reasons why people in the northern United States began to
            oppose slavery during the thirty years prior to the Civil War.

       (2) According to one explanation, the antislavery movement in the United States began
            in the northern states thirty years before the Civil War; another theory challenges
            this view.

       (3) During the thirty years that preceded the Civil War, most people living in the
            northern United States came to oppose slavery; the two theories that attempt to
            explain how this happened contradict each other.

       (4) In the thirty years that led up to the Civil War, Northerners held two irreconcilable
            positions regarding slavery.

12.	 German graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz used her work as a vehicle to express

       her compassion for the plight of the poor and the downtrodden.

       (1) Käthe Kollwitz used graphics and sculpture to depict what she perceived to be
            society's indifference to the plight of the poor and the downtrodden.

       (2) In her work, Käthe Kollwitz aspired to produce a realistic portrayal of Germany's
            poor and downtrodden.
